Solar-Powered Electric Car Charging Stations Elevate Ecotourism at the Savage River Lodge

GARRETT COUNTY, MD -- The Savage River Lodge was built as a retreat from hectic lives, constructed from eco-friendly materials and operated sustainably on a private tract of land within the Savage River State Forest. The Lodge secured footing as an ecotourism destination in 2011 with the installation of 325 solar panels, and this summer they are kicking it up another notch, installing two solar-powered electric car charging stations – the first electric car charging station in Western Maryland.

These charging stations will be the cherry on top of a “green” getaway for the environmentally conscious traveler. Guests arrive at a sustainably-built, private cabin or yurt, choose from a host of eco-friendly wine from the wine list, paired with a delightful selection of locally-sourced food, in the restaurant. Starting in June, even travel to and from the mountains of Western Maryland can be entirely green.

There are a handful of charging stations in the area, making zero-emission travel possible. Owners of the Lodge, Mike Dreisbach and Jan Russell are proud to be the first within an hour’s drive to offer a Tesla-specific charging station alongside a universal station for electric and hybrid vehicles. “We work hard to lead the way in terms of sustainability, and this was a big step forward,” says Dreisbach. The stations are even connected to the Lodge’s solar panels, providing the cleanest and greenest energy possible. Rainy day? Don’t fret – there is always backup.
