Historic marker for pioneering publisher makes its return

10-27-2005

PUBLIC INVITED TO REDEDICATION CEREMONY TODAY -- Bob Jacobs, Dennis Ammer and Pat Byrne, all with the City of Pittsburgh's Public Works, restore the historical marker honoring pioneer publisher and postmaster John Scull to its location along the Boulevard of the Allies, Downtown, yesterday. The marker, one of the many around the state placed by the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission, honors Scull who brought the first printing press over the mountains of Pennsylvania to the frontier outpost of Pittsburgh in 1786. In the course of researching a story on historical markers several years ago, PG Travel Editor David Bear discovered the Scull memorial was missing from its position along the Boulevard of the Allies. Click here to learn more about the story of the missing marker and the civic and business community partners who banded together to replace it. A ceremony to formally unveil the new marker is scheduled for 3:45 p.m. today, when Clarke Thomas, author of the recently published "Front Page: Pittsburgh," will offer remarks about Scull and his importance in the city's history. Interested readers are invited to attend today's ceremony at the marker's location at the corner of the Boulevard of the Allies and Market Street, Downtown.
