Tourists told to delay trips to Prague

08-15-2002

As Eastern European rivers recede after heavy flooding, travelers planning to visit Prague, Czech Republic, are being advised to postpone trips until late August.

Prague city center is still closed, but will reopen as soon as possible. Prague airport remains open; many bridges have been temporarily closed for traffic; the subway is operating on a limited schedule, while some stations are closed.

All the major monuments in Prague and other cities remain standing, including Prague's landmark, the 14th-century Charles Bridge.

Most of Austria's major tourist areas have recovered from the floods.

Vienna was spared any major damage due to an extensive flood protection system, with only local traffic delays. The Salzburg Festival is continuing without interruption.

However, the sightseeing boat Amadeus, which was just inaugurated earlier this year, will not operate until at least next Thursday.

Hardest hit were destinations in the Wachau Valley along the Danube between Linz and Vienna. The historic small towns in the Wachau, a World Heritage Site, remain partially flooded at this time and bike trails along the Danube are closed.

Travelers over the next few days can expect to experience minor delays and interruptions on smaller roads and highways. All major freeways and rail lines are open. For updates, call Austria's tourist office at 1-212-944 6880.
