18cm of Snow Fell Last Day of January, Bringing Month Snowfall Total to 264cm
WHISTLER, BC, February 1, 2008 – January was a mix of snow and sun (but mostly snow), drawing sun worshipers and powder hogs to the slopes of Whistler Blackcomb. The average snowfall in January is 209cm which was hit on the 15th of this month. In total, January received 264cm of snow.
“So far this season we’ve received over 22.5 feet of snow which means we’re two thirds of the way to hitting the annual average snowfall of 33.5 feet – and we’re not even half way through the season,” says Alex Hearn, the voice of the Whistler Blackcomb snowphone. “We’ve had epic conditions right from the get-go and as we transition into February, we’re looking at more big snowfall days.
Bestskiweather.com weather forecaster Jim Roemer is calling for “a short term blocking ridge to break down over the Gulf of Alaska” in the next few days. Roemer continues “the weather pattern appears as it will bring huge snows to much of BC over the next 10 days. The biggest of storms will come from around February 5 to 7th, when Whistler could see 1.3 to 2.5 feet of snow.”
Combine great snow conditions with stellar events and February is shaping up to be a great month. February 12 is the two year countdown mark for the 2010 Winter Olympic and Paralympic Games. The Whistler World Cup presented by TELUS is February 18-24 and February 27-29 the Canadian National Snow Sculpting Team will be showcasing their work on Whistler Mountain.
