Historic Manayunk Community To Show Off Its Great Tastes With
1st Annual ‘StrEAT Food Festival’ and ‘Restaurant Week,’ Sept. 29 – Oct. 5
MANAYUNK (PHILADELPHIA), PA -- Philadelphia’s historic Manayunk neighborhood is reclaiming its heritage as an eclectic hot spot for the city’s many devoted “foodies.” Manayunk, known for such popular dining destinations as Jake’s and Derek’s on Main Street, is serving notice that its restaurant scene is alive and electric by staging two inaugural events in late September and early October – the Manayunk “StrEAT Food Festival,” followed immediately by the community’s first-ever “Restaurant Week.”
The culinary cavalcade begins on Saturday, September 29th with the first annual "StrEAT Food Festival,” which runs from 10 am until 5 pm (rain or shine) and will feature more than 20 food truck vendors from across the region, with cuisine ranging from the simple to the sophisticated (complete list of vendors to be announced soon). The food trucks will line the Main Street retail corridor - which will remain open - from Green Lane to Shurs Lane, facing the sidewalk for pedestrian access. Visitors are encouraged to stroll the street, taste the offerings from their favorite trucks, and sit and enjoy the food at picnic-style seating areas along the sidewalk. Each participating food truck vendor must prepare at least one entree or dessert item that includes fresh apples as a key ingredient. Some of the early entries include spiced apple cider pops, an Apple Jack burger, grilled cheese with apples, and apple chutney on hot dogs. A panel of local celebrity judges (to be announced) will taste all entries and award a prize to the top apple-accented dish. In addition to food truck cuisine, the event will feature free, live music throughout the day on Cotton Street, which will be closed to traffic and include seating and tables so visitors can nosh while enjoying the live tunes. The “StrEAT Food Festival” also will feature two temporary, outdoor Farmer's Markets, one at the Levering Street parking lot and one at the Lock Street parking lot. Each will feature fresh, locally-grown produce.
The "StrEAT Food Festival" will serve as the kick-off to Manayunk's 1st Annual "Restaurant Week," which runs from Sunday, September 30th through Friday, October 5th. Manayunk’s many acclaimed restaurants will offer nightly dinner and drink specials to entice visitors to Main Street. All participating restaurants will create three-course prix-fixe meals priced at $10, $20, or $30.
“Not that long ago, Manayunk was a prime destination for food-lovers in search of a delicious, eclectic and affordable dining experience. Over the years, competition has increased, but our inaugural StrEAT Festival and Restaurant Week signals Manayunk’s return to prominence as one of the region’s most fun, diverse and affordable dining scenes, whether you crave a fine dining experience or just a fun night on the town with your foodie friends, Manayunk has it all,” said Manayunk Development Corporation Executive Director Jane Lipton.
With its classic storefronts, beautiful trails, and historic towpath along the canal, Manayunk offers a prime location to take a break from the hustle and bustle of the city without leaving the city limits.
