Shadow of Bear Punctuates Fall Foliage in Jackson County

CASHIERS, N.C. - One of the most unique leaf-looking experiences in the United States will soon be lumbering into view.

The "Shadow of the Bear," located in southern Jackson County near Cashiers, is visible for about 30 minutes daily between 5:30-6 p.m. from mid October through early
November.

During this period, the bear-like shadow comes out of hibernation as the autumnal sun sets behind Whiteside Mountain.

The mountain, with an elevation of 4,930 feet, boasts sheer rock cliffs that are among the highest in the eastern United States. It provides a splendid setting for viewing leaves throughout autumn, especially during the emergence of the bear.

Tourists and photographers come from near and far to catch a glimpse of this natural phenomenon, which can best be viewed from the Rhodes Big View Overlook on U.S. Hwy. 64, approximately 4.5 miles west of Cashiers.

The shadow also occurs in late winter from mid February through early March.

Folks interested in viewing the bear, as well as other colorful fall foliage in Jackson County, should contact the Jackson County Visitors Center at (800) 962-1911, or go online to: www.MountainLovers.com.
