Kansas Journals: October 2012

Once a month the Kansas Department of Wildlife, Parks and Tourism distributes this brief newsletter, providing tourism updates from throughout the state of Kansas. Highlights include a title, brief descriptor and a link for more details.   Not all highlights will be of interest to everyone. They are simply intended to entice new story ideas in the areas of agritourism, outdoor, culinary, cultural, history, heritage and more. For more information contact Cathy Kruzic at or 303-320-6849.

Celebrate the Holidays - Kansas Style: Kansas will celebrate the holidays with the sparkle and splendor of the prairie, plains and cities this season. From the spirit of imagination to reflective childhood recollections, kids of all ages can share in the holiday excitement of Kansas. Whether it's the largest lighting display between Kansas City and Denver in Wakeeney, KS or a Parade of Lights on horseback in Dodge City, KS, festivities are as varied and unique as the cities themselves. For information on holiday celebrations in Kansas, visit

They Also Ran: The Presidential Hopefuls: The office of the U.S. Presidency is the most coveted in the land, offering the highest recognition to those who claim the final victory. But what about the candidates we never hear about - the men who also ran and lost? This exhibit, running from 12/2/12 - 01/27/13 at the Stauth Memorial Museum in Montezuma, KS is a fascinating look at American politics and the men who gave the presidents a run for their money. The show highlights military heroes who became candidates, incumbents who lost, and the fluctuating costs of running a campaign. The biographies featured shed new light on American history and the electoral process. For more information visit
