Massive Gingerbread Village + 20 Foot Train + Capital Hotel + Little Rock, AR

11-30-2012

A Capital Christmas Spreads Christmas Cheer with Themed Classes and Events

The towering 24-foot Christmas Tree stands firmly straight in the center of the spacious and elegant lobby of the historic Capital Hotel with layers of 25 thousand twinkling lights and all the treasured trimmings of a Southern Christmas. A trove of seasonal activities begins with the celebrated tree illumination that “lights up” the holiday series of events - choir groups caroling, magical storytelling, merry music, and hands-on crafts and cooking, round out the memorable month of December.

When the clock strikes 5pm Monday, December 3, both Santa Claus and the Nutcracker Ballet officially welcome Christmas with the unveiling of the enormous Gingerbread Village created by veteran pastry chef Tandra Watkins. Patrons will marvel at this 12 by 14 foot masterpiece using over 50 pounds of sugar for the icing that blankets the picturesque village - down to the last swag of garland adorning the sundeck, and the 100 handmade pine trees dotting the sugar coated winter wonderland through which a Polar Express train travels along more than 20 feet of track. This year’s village, created after months of planning, gingerbread baking, and fondant applying, will be of a countryside scene, filled with farms, snow forts complete with ready-made snowballs, an Ozark “shotgun shack” outhouse, wildlife animals, and of course, a giant Christmas tree. The “ooos” and “ahhs” will continue as guests peruse the Gourmet Food for purchase, including Capital Eggnog, hand-made lovingly by bartender David Burnette, whose recipe was featured in Food Network Magazine and Southern Living Magazine.

Nutcracker and Teddy Bear Teas are traditional favorite offerings amongst the locals with such delicacies to devour like Scones and Finger Sandwiches with a glass of Champagne as well as child friendly treats including Hot Chocolate, Apple Juice, Peanut Butter and Jelly, and Ham and Cheese Croissants. Guests can Leave the Wrapping to our Elves while they lunch in Ashley’s and leisurely pick up decorative gifts on the way out at the valet station.

For the second year in a row, Ginger Bread House Decorating Classes will be hosted by pastry maven Tandra. Among the line up of these traditional favorites will be one class catered to parents that are eager to build their own culinary confection. Cocktails and small bites will help inspire creativity. Children can whisper their wishes during storytelling and memorable afternoons at Sunday’s With Santa. LocalSchool Choirs and Instrumental Groups will also be performing classical Christmas songs throughout December in the lobby.
