-Fool’s Gold Stars Made Hamilton Their New Home While Shooting the Movie-
NEW YORK, NY February 6, 2008 -- It will not only be the on-screen chemistry between Matthew McConaughey and Kate Hudson in Fool’s Gold that will delight audiences this week when the movie launches, but the spectacular footage of Australia’s Whitsunday Islands and Great Barrier Reef will give the moviegoer a welcome respite from the winter blues.
Shot on location in Queensland, Australia in early 2007, Fool’s Gold provides sweeping views of pristine, white beaches and Australia’s natural wonder - the Great Barrier Reef. The movie’s stars, including Donald Sutherland and more than 200 crew, were based on Hamilton Island - the largest inhabited island in the Whitsundays - while shooting.
During this time McConaughey and Hudson were regularly spotted enjoying the magnificent year-round tropical weather and laid-back island atmosphere. True to his reputation, McConaughey was seen shirtless daily, enjoying jogs around the island and regularly driving around Hamilton in a golf buggy. While Hudson, who has been quoted in many publications saying she loves Australia, traveled with her young son Ryder and kept a lower profile, shopping in the island’s small boutiques including “Foot’s Artwork” - a gallery owned by ex-pat American sculptor, Foot Young.
“It is easy to see why Hamilton was such a draw for Hollywood,” said Hamilton Island’s Director of Sales and Marketing Michelle Kenna. “It truly is one of the most beautiful locations in Australia and is the launching pad to our world heritage-listed Great Barrier Reef.”

Note to editors: Hamilton Island is one of 74 tropical islands in the Coral Sea between the Queensland coast and the Great Barrier Reef in Australia. The largest inhabited island in the Whitsunday Islands, Hamilton Island is on the same latitude in the southern hemisphere as Honolulu in the north with an average of 81F temperatures year-round. With more than seven accommodation choices, 10 restaurants and varied activities, the Island makes the perfect launching pad for US travelers to enjoy Australia’s most spectacular beaches, explore the Great Barrier Reef and create an unforgettable vacation in tropical Australia. Hamilton is accessible by short, direct flights from Sydney, Brisbane and Melbourne.
