Happy Birthday, Mr. Jefferson!

02-27-2013

His legacy lives on at The Jefferson, DC and The Clifton Inn

You’re only 270 once. Come this April 13 [the anniversary of Thomas Jefferson’s birth,] The Jefferson, DC and The Clifton Inn will pay a celebratory tribute to our most gastronomically inclined Founding Father.

True to its name, Washington’s acclaimed hotel The Jefferson, DC is proud to possess the country’s most extensive collection of Madeira, dating back to 1790. Once opened, a bottle of Madeira will last forever – and its history runs deep.  The drink of choice among Jefferson’s crowd, this fortified wine was used to toast the signing of the Declaration of Independence and the Louisiana Purchase, and an undocumented quantity was consumed getting those projects off the ground; Jefferson himself is said to have kept over 4,400 bottles in The White House wine cellar during his presidency.

Advanced Sommelier Michael Scaffidi, formerly of the French Laundry, takes great pride and pleasure in each bottle he collects for The Jefferson’s cellar.  From Tuesday April 9 to Saturday, April 13, in honor of the big birthday, The Jefferson is offering a 270-year Madeira tasting.  For $270, three vintages of the historic wine, their ages adding up to 270, [one from the 19th century and two from the 20th] provide an exquisite range of flavorful history.

Down in Thomas Jefferson country, The Clifton Inn in Charlottesville, VA makes Madeira a way of life, every day.  Each of the guest rooms in this Relais & Châteaux property – originally gifted to Jefferson’s daughter – comes equipped with a fine decanter of complimentary Madeira [Broadbent Madeira Reserve 5 Yr. NV] and a card of detailing its history as the preferred wine of Jefferson’s time. Toast to the nation’s first oenophile while enjoying Jefferson’s Birthday Flight of Winesspecifically curated with five tastings based on his personal favorites including Madeira, a sparkling Italian, and three French varieties [available Saturday, April 13 through Saturday, April 20 for $20 per person.]

Dinner is served in true Jeffersonian style at Plume, The Jefferson DC’s acclaimed restaurant, which pays a nod to his role as Founding Gourmand. Executive chef Chris Jakubiec incorporates Jefferson’s known favorites into his seven-course Thomas Jefferson Tasting Menu featuring: Green Asparagus Soup with Asparagus Marmalade, Smoked Olive Oil, and Black Pepper CreamEnglish Pea Panna Cotta with Serrano Ham, Pea Tendrils, Lemon Oil and RicottaFilet of Dover Sole “Bourgignon” with  Lardons, Seasonal Mushrooms and Red Wine JusMedallion of Veal Tenderloin with Truffled Macaroni & Cheese and Crispy Sweetbreads, Spinach Cream and Madeira Jus; and Pistachio Crème Brûlée with Morello Cherry Compote and Yuzu Ice Cream for $110 per person.
