WAIKIKI, HONOLULU, HAWAII– To celebrate Hawaii’s beloved cultural tradition of hula, OutriggerHawaii.com – a website created by Outrigger Hotels and Resorts to showcase everything from island culture and food to ideas for romance and adventure in Hawaii – has released its newest short video, “The Story of Hula,” that features perspectives on the tradition of hula from two respected kumu hula (master teachers). Kumu hula Blaine Kamalani Kia and Leimomi Ho share their views on the significance of hula as a way of life and an expression of beauty and love that is uniquely Hawaiian.

Kumu hula Blaine Kamalani Kia describes hula as “recounting events and bringing them back alive through dance.” He continues by saying, “Everything in hula, all our chants, can tell us everything about morals, everything about ethics, everything about our daily life.”

Hula and chant embody kaona, deeper meaning, poetically expressed through words and dance. For the observer of hula, “If your mind and soul and heart are in it, you’re going to pick up everything they’re trying to express to you,” shares kumu hula Leimomi Ho.
