Travelers Mingle with Locals Who May Have Never Met Outsiders Before
Elizabeth, CO, October 2, 2013 – Bound by a budget? Think old world Europe and specifically the Balkan Peninsula’s yet-to-be-discovered country,
Macedonia.
A leading in-country active tour company, Macedonia Experience (
http://www.macedoniaexperience.com/), brings the country to the attention of active travelers through a potpourri of touring programs that put the traveler in touch with local bakers and shopkeepers who may have never before met foreigners.
One exploration offered by
Macedonia Experience is an
8-day program beginning in Skopje in the northwest of the country. This city, inhabited since 4000 BC, signifies an important crossroads for the ravages that come with conquering peoples. Here guests receive an overview of this ancient and overlooked land, including a visit to the Old Skopje Bazaar and a typical Macedonian dinner.
Monasteries and mountains highlight day two of the tour. Mavrovo National Park and an alpine hike lead to sweet dreams on day three. Near the border of Albania come tours of Ohrid on a lake of the same name. Known as Jerusalem of the Balkans (at one time there were 365 churches here), history is magnified by numerous religious shrines, monasteries and stories revealed over days four and five. Day six includes a boat ride across Lake Ohrid to the Monastery of St. Naum established in 905, and on day seven participants travel to the southwest, nine miles from the border of Greece, to the city of Bitola and the ancient town of Heraclea Lyncestis (founded in the 4
th Century BC by Philip II, father of Alexander the Great.) The return this night is to Skopje.
Included in the approximately €1200 rate per person double are in-country transportation with airport transfers, hotel accommodations and meals that can be chosen in accordance with guest preferences, an English speaking tour guide and taxes. For 10 people the rate drops to approximately 700 EU per person double. See:

Mountainous Macedonia is struggling to find its place in the post-communist world. Black-clad Orthodox monks, teenagers bedecked in Italian fashions, a 95 percent literacy rate and free access to the Internet are at home where being a shepherd is a legitimate profession, donkeys and horses draw carts through villages, there are no tourist shops and there’s little processed food because they grow what they eat.
“Our clients play a crucial role in helping us to realize our vision. By traveling with us, we hope not only to nourish your soul but to turn you into the engine that drives our dream of letting the world know about the beauties of Macedonia. You are our future ambassadors,” said Jane Josifovski, product manager and co-owner.
