A Good Excuse to Spend a Summer Week in Oxford, England

01-09-2014

Take a No Papers, No Exams Course at The Oxford Experience

Oxford, England, January 9, 2013—What could be more heavenly than  to spend a summer week in this “city of dreaming spires” that’s so familiar from television shows and movies.  You can go punting on the River Cherwell, walk through the flowering Botanic Garden, sip a pint in Oxford’s oldest pub, take in a concert at Christopher Wren’s Sheldonian Theatre, browse through the famous Blackwell’s book store.and shop for strawberries in the 1772 Covered Market.

What’s more, you can justify this lollygagging by taking a one-week course  and learning something at  the Oxford University summer school called The Oxford Experience.  There are no requirements, no papers, no exams at The Oxford Experience.  Participants attend the oldest university in the English-speaking world, live in rooms where English prime ministers and poets once lived, dine on High Table in the magnificent Tudor Hall (recognizable from Harry Potter films) and learn about history, literature, art, and culture.

The Oxford Experience takes place at Christ Church, the most prestigious and beautiful of all Oxford colleges.  It  is open to anyone who would enjoy such courses as The Birth of Europe, William the Conqueror, The Life of Oliver Cromwell, Anglo-Saxons and Celts in Britain, Oxford Criminality in Fact and Fiction, Great Victorians, British Scientists and Inventors, and Holy Places in Medieval Britain.  Classes (of 12 students) are made up of Anglophiles from all over the world.

During the week there are tours of Christ Church and Oxford, as well as excursions to stately homes, castles, museums and such.  At night there might be a pub crawl, a special lecture, wine and croquet in the Masters’ Garden and Evensong in the college chapel, which is also the Oxford Cathedral.  Once a week each participant is invited to dine on High Table and on the final night there is a champagne reception in the Cathedral Garden and a gala dinner in Hall.

The price of a one-week course is £1,230 or about $2,017 in U.S. dollars or $2,172 in Canadian dollars. This includes tuition, accommodation and all meals (a full English breakfast, a buffet lunch and a served three-course dinner),.  Excursions and private bathrooms are extra.  The official deadline for 2014 registration is May 1, but courses are filling quickly.  For additional information, visit www.conted.ox.ac.uk/oxfordexperience or write to The Oxford Experience, OUDCE, 1 Wellington Square, Oxford OX 1  2JA,  U.K.
