We are excited to introduce a new column in this edition of Periscope - Conversations about Conservation - written by Stephen Cunliffe, in which he explores some of the challenges and successes facing our wilderness today. We will in future be alternating this with our regular interview series. We are also welcoming three new partner guides to our team - all with deep and varied experience, so make sure to read more about each of them. In our ongoing quest for new challenges, we are also delighted to introduce an invitational safari to Asia, lead by the multi-talented Stephen Cunliffe. If the wilds of the subcontinent have ever appealed to you, do have a look at what we believe will be an extraordinary adventure. The Lions of Luiwa by Stephen Cunliffe
There are few places in Africa where you can still enjoy the spectacle of lions, hyaenas and wild dogs in hot pursuit of masses of wildebeest as they thunder across a wide-open savanna. One such place is remote Liuwa Plain National Park in western Zambia, the setting for the second-largest wildebeest migration on the continent and home to Africa’s most famous lioness.
When surrounded by the incredible natural bounty of this veritable Garden of Eden, it is hard to appreciate just how close Liuwa’s unique ecosystem came to collapsing. Historically host to an astounding abundance and diversity of wildlife, the national park was stripped almost bare by poachers towards the turn of the century. Today, thanks to the dedicated conservation efforts of African Parks and the enterprising research work of the Zambian Carnivore Programme, Liuwa is making a stunning comeback.
