Québec City kicks off the winter season with a weekend to remember
November’s final weekend will be a real blockbuster in Québec City with a flurry of heavyweight events. Red Bull Crashed Ice celebrates its 10th year in town and joins the Vanier Cup and the opening of the German Christmas Market to light up the weekend of November 27 and 28.
Red Bull Crashed Ice has only one Canadian stop this season, and it’s in Québec City, November 27 and 28. The course showcases the city’s magnificent Old Quarter, and the event opens the 2015–2016 world tour. And since it coincides with the American Thanksgiving weekend, it’s a great opportunity for travellers from south of the border to come up for a visit. Perhaps the strong U.S. dollar will be another incentive to make the trip.
“There’s no question that having Red Bull Crashed Ice for a 10th time is a great opportunity to showcase the city as a travel destination,” said André Roy, director of Québec City Tourism. “It boosts our visibility and lets everyone know that we’re a place for top-drawer international productions.”
Events like this can have significant spillover benefits for the Québec City economy. Attendance at the last Red Bull Crashed Ice here in 2013 was estimated at 110 000, including 51 670 from outside the city. The total economic impact topped the $9 million mark, according to a study commissioned by Gestev in 2014.
The Vanier Cup, Canada’s university football championship, is undoubtedly a high point of the year in sports. This year’s edition will be held at Laval University Stadium on the afternoon of November 28. It’s a remarkable gathering of football fans and draws close to 20 000 spectators. Of these, 18% are out-of-town visitors, 43% of whom spend two or more days in Québec City.
The German Christmas Market enters its 8th season this year, and runs from November 27 to December 20. The popularity of the event has been increasing every year, clocking in at more than 68 000 admissions last time out. The German Christmas Market is a great addition to area attractions and brings an added touch of magic to the heart of the Old City, just in time for the Holiday Season.
“It goes without saying that international visibility like this just as the winter Holiday Season is getting underway will do great things for winter tourism in 2015–2016,” concluded Québec City Tourism director André Roy.
