THE ICE RINK AT ROCKEFELLER CENTER

10-10-2007

NEW YORK, NY: October 9, 2007 – The Ice Rink at Rockefeller Center opens to the public yesterday to kick-off the winter season, despite temperatures being in the high 80’s. This year’s Rink commencement marks the beginning of the festivities leading to the 75th anniversary of the beloved Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree.  For generations, these two epic landmarks have attracted visitors from around the world and this season is proving to be just as alluring.

“The Ice Rink celebrated a milestone birthday of its own last year and we are proud to be a part of such a momentous occasion as the 75th anniversary of the Christmas Tree,” said Nick Valenti, CEO of Patina Restaurant Group, which operates The Ice Rink and its surrounding restaurants, The Sea Grill and Rock Center Café.  “The tradition of visiting The Ice Rink and the Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree has spanned generations and lasted throughout the decades and there are many more memorable years to come!”

The Rink first opened on Christmas Day in 1936 as the premier artificial outdoor skating pond built in New York City, complete with modern amenities: night skating, a heated house for changing skates, piped-in music and rink-side dining.  Over the past 70 years, The Ice Rink has become one of the most visited sights in NYC—and even the world!  Over 150,000 skaters graced the ice last year, and The Rink expects even more this season!

The perfect destination for both families and lovebirds, The Ice Rink has several phenomenal programs planned for the upcoming skating season:  “Engagements on Ice” will be available throughout the season, which includes private time on The Ice Rink, a champagne toast at Rock Center Café and an exclusive gift bag from Brides.com.  “Breakfast with Santa” will kick off at the end of November and last through Christmas Eve for the kids to spend some quality time with St. Nick, enjoy a delicious breakfast at Rock Center Café and partake in a skate session.  For those looking for a unique morning workout, Olympic gold medalist Jojo Starbuck hosts a morning “Cool Workout Sessions” program.

The Ice Rink at Rockefeller Center is located on 5th Avenue between 49th and 50th Streets.  For schedules and skate rental information, please visit www.rapatina.com/IceRink.
