Mardi Gras, Quebec Style

By Judi Janofsky & Rich Steck

After five days at “Carnaval de Quebec” this year, the grins on our faces had become so permanent that nothing we did could erase them. It was indeed more fun than we’d experienced since we were ten and went to Disneyworld for the first time.

This year’s winter carnival, a Mardi Gras on ice, celebrated the 400th birthday of Quebec City and there was no lack of commemorative activities, although we heard from a number of people that the Quebecois’ 17-day Carnaval party is like this every year and attracts over a half-million people.

Throughout the city, venues are set up to scatter the revelers and make it more enjoyable for everyone. Which worked well except for the Calgary Stampede Flapjack Breakfast, an event sponsored by the annual cowboy show held in Alberta. And a stampede it nearly was with herds of people lined up to get free pancake-wrapped sausages and huge white cowboy hats.

John and Gail Hecko with us sporting our Calgary cowboy hats.

Filled up with the grub and sporting our cowboy hats we moseyed on down to Carnaval’s other winter venues, including --

The Ice Palace
Made out of 7,000 75-pound blocks of translucent ice illuminated with blue lights, the magical palace is built every year for Bonhomme, a giant, smiling snow figure that is Carnaval’s annual guest of honor. Inside, we walked through rooms decorated with musical instruments – from a set of drums to a baby grand piano each meticulously carved from massive blocks of ice. Outside, we joined in with a chorus of line dancers dancing to American country music.
