A Taste of Early 20th Century Elegance on Historic African Rails
New York, NY - March 2008 - Gourmet travelers can now live their "Out of Africa" dreams aboard the new Royal Livingstone Express, an exclusive extension of Sun International's 5-star Royal Livingstone Hotel at Victoria Falls. The antique locomotive combines the elegance of early 20th century travel along with panoramic views of the lush Zambezi Valley. Guests journey to the past with a timeless railway experience where fine dining meets the Zambia bush and opportunities abound to spot white rhino, buffalo, elephant and other wildlife during the gourmet dinner excursion.
The locomotive consists of two dining cars, a fully equipped kitchen car, a lounge car, and an observation car to view the breathtaking scenery. The warm and luxurious ambiance of these Pullman style carriages offers a romantic and nostalgic dining experience. The wooden interiors are softly lit by individual lamps on each table, lighting the crystal glassware, silver cutlery and damask linens. For $150 per person, Wednesdays through Saturdays, guests can enjoy a six-course dinner prepared by the Royal Livingstone Hotel chefs, wine, beer and soft drinks, along with the breathtaking scenery. The unforgettable journey departs near the hotel and takes approximately three hours, covering 12 miles of gorgeous landscapes.
David Shepard, a renowned wildlife artist, renovated this locomotive to its working condition and donated it to the National Heritage Conservation Commission, who then teamed with Sun International Zambia and Bushtracks Africa. The train was originally on display in 1924 at the British Empire Exhibition in London and was later used to pull logging carriages on the Mulobezi Line.
