Celebrate Arbor Day in Middleburg, Va.

04-02-2008

Middleburg, Va. -- The town of Middleburg has come alive after a long winter and will celebrate spring with a special Arbor Day event, April 26.

Middleburg, a designated Tree City, USA has planned a fun-filled celebration to help increase environmental awareness. The Tree City, USA program was established by the The National Arbor Day Foundation and the National Association of State Foresters to recognize communities that have set up community programs and donated time and effort to improve the environmental health of their area.

"With the Spring Races and Arbor Day so close together, the town businesses have agreed that it is only natural to get involved by offering fun incentives to eat and shop in town before, during and after these events," said Mayor Betsy Davis. "Since the town is a designated Tree City and there is an active Go Green Committee, some activities include tree planting, a plant sale, and a poster contest".

The theme for this year’s poster contest is “Trees Go Green for Middleburg” and will be submitted by the students of Middleburg Elementary School and the Hill School.  On Saturday April 26, hayrides will be provided by Harmon’s Hayrides and sponsored by Middleburg Bank. Visitors will also be able to purchase a “passport” for $5 that includes a map of the town and a scavenger hunt that will take them to different restaurants throughout the town, while collecting delicious samples from each. Some of the participating restaurants are French Hound, Back Street, Mello Out, Teddy’s, Dank’s Deli, Cup of Giddyup, The Wine Cellar, Red Fox, Hidden Horse, Upper Crust, Red Horse Tavern, Market Salamander, Middleburg Creamery, The Coach Stop and Home Farm Store. The proceeds will go towards Middleburg Beautification. Businesses will also display specially-decorated living trees, donated by South Riding Nursery, and will be available for purchase.  The decoration will include a special offer for that particular store, and will be sold for $1 each.

In addition to the events on Arbor Day, Middleburg restaurants will be celebrating spring and the Spring Race season by offering specials, April 14-27.
