Maritime History & Country Inns

(First of a two-part series)

By Patricia and Robert Foulke

Where would you like to be for a luxurious holiday? If you would ordinarily choose somewhere in Britain, you don’t need to let the unfavorable dollar exchange rate deter you. Just resolve to stay out of London, where prices are indeed daunting. As long as you opt for the perennially attractive English countryside, you don’t have to wait for a strong dollar to make that trip back to Britain.

My husband and I, as academics in our first career, lived in Britain every few years on research or sabbatical leaves. Our second career overlapped the teaching years as we became travel writers for the next 29 years. Several months ago we revisited our favorite country inns on a trip across southern England and Wales. A rental car provided an easy way to follow our memories.

We focused on maritime museums, as well as birthplaces of early explorers to the New World in the 17th century and those of emigrants arriving in America in the 17th and 18th centuries. After reading about the history and birthplaces of English explorers and settlers we planned to dovetail romantic and alluring country inns with the sites.

The entire trip was a delight as we searched for a little adventure and a lot of relaxation in beautiful settings. Our rental car took us in clockwise fashion through eastern, southern and western England on a route that made sense. It was exhilarating to explore historical villages as well as maritime museums that trace seafaring history in Britain. We combined historical exploration with a favorite interest, and ended each day in at a country inn.

We drove on to Alford and located his Grammar School. But the real find was Willoughby, where he was born and baptised. In the 1960s Americans donated stunning stained glass windows depicting his life to St. Helena Church in Willoughby.
