The 2008 Silk Route Bicycle Expedition is getting ready to roll out of Istanbul in just over three months. Sign up for the full tour or simply join us for one or more of the incredible sections available on this spectacular route. Cycle the 'Hills of Anatolia' departing from Istanbul, one of the world's great cities, and make your way to Tbilisi, capital of the former Soviet Republic of Georgia. Along the way you will enjoy the warm hospitality of the Turkish people, feast on the incredible produce in the markets and, perhaps, toast the end of your journey with some potent 'cha-cha' among your new Georgian friends. Or maybe you would prefer the challenge of 'The Pass', climbing out of the historic Silk Route city of Samarqand up, into and over the snow-capped mountains of Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan, descending afterwards into the legendary city of Kashgar.

The Zambezi Zone
Zambia’s undulating landscape and vast plains have provided some of the most spectacular riding on the tour. Many riders have commented that Zambian scenery is how they pictured the entire ride across Africa—towering elephant grass, undulating hills and roadside wildlife. Zambia is putting into perspective our cycling odyssey, as we just now greet the landscape we imagined cycling through. The previous three months come to mind, our unforeseeable experiences, and how our impressions of Africa fluctuate with its capricious character. We’ve sweated in the dusty, dry deserts of Egypt and Sudan. We’ve labored across the mountains of Ethiopia’s highlands and pedaled beneath Tanzania’s vast skies and along its lush fauna. We’ve battled Malawi’s mosquitoes and sipped its famed tipple on the shores of Lake Malawi. In Zambia, everyday seems like a safari and upon entering Botswana, we are sure to have close encounters with its scores of elephants. Namibia and South Africa have yet to unveil their treasures and we can’t wait to uncover them.
TDA Foundation News
The Tour d’ Afrique Foundation donated fifty-seven bicycles in Lilongwe, Malawi on Thursday, April 3rd. Bicycles were split between two non-profit organizations—CPAR (Canadian Physicians for Aid and Relief) and Coopi Maleeza. Fundraising for 41 of the bicycles came from 2008 riders: Kerri Finlayson (28 bicycles), Deborah Menzies (8 bicycles), and Maxime Allard (5 bicycles). Sixteen of the bicycles were donated through funds raised by previous TDA riders: Phil Hart (3 bicycles), Monty Orr (5 bicycles), J.J. Hilsinger (5 bicycles), and Fred Pomoli (3 bicycles).
At the donation, a CPAR representative gave a brief speech thanking the TDA for bicycles and reiterating the importance of bicycles to their mission. He explained that much of their work takes places Malawi’s rural villages and bicycles allow peer educators to visit many villages in a day. Coopi Maleeza’s representative expressed her gratitude for the bicycles and explained the bicycles' importance in preventing malaria.
The bicycles were purchased through the Africycle program, a non profit organization that collects used bicycles in Toronto and ships them to Malawi via shipping container. When they arrive in Zomba, Malawi, the Africycle shop—run by volunteers and trained locals— repairs and restores the bikes to be sold locally.
