Sherry Harvest Starts September 1st - Interviews Available w/ Wine Experts

09-08-2007

This week — after months of eager anticipation — the 2007 Sherry harvest season began! Experts are predicting a great harvest, with at least a 10 percent increase than the last one.

About Sherry

Sherry, one of the world’s most famous wines, comes from the Jerez region in southern Spain. The demarcated wine-growing region is known as the “Sherry triangle” consisting of Jerez de la Frontera, El Puerto de Santa Maria and Sanlucar de Barrameda. This wine-growing region, the southern-most in Europe, has been legally defined since 1933 – but Sherry has been made there for centuries. All of the activities related to Sherry production are regulated and controlled by the Consejo Regulador de las Denominaciones de Origen Jerez-Xérés-Sherry, which ensures the quality of all the wine and works to protect the origin of the Sherry name.

The region is known for its extremely warm climate, stiff winds and typically enjoys 300 days of sunshine per year. The majority of the region is made of a chalky, calcium-rich soil known as albariza. This porous soil retains the moisture of each winter’s rainfall, and then nourishes the vines during the dry months.

About the Center

The Center for Wine Origins was established in 2005 to promote the importance of location and better protect geographic names in the U.S. market. The Center is headquartered in Washington, DC and is involved in a wide array of activities aimed at educating consumers, policymakers and the media about the importance of wine origins and providing better resources for consumers to make informed choices. The wine-making regions involved in the campaign are regulated by the European system of Appellations, designed to ensure authenticity and quality for consumers.
