Airline News Not Clear in Atlanta Clear, the company that introduced fast-lane security checks for paid members at airports around the country, got a bit of a set-back with plans to expand into the world’s busiest airport. Atlanta’s Hartsfield-Jackson Airport told Clear and other suitors that they want to work on easing the security lines at their airport by re-configuring the lanes they have and adding new free-of-charge lanes before they decide if Atlanta needs a paid-for lane. The airport has been working to reduce security-line wait times which can run as long as one and one-half hours. Currently there are 28 lanes at the airport but the new plans call for eliminating six lanes that are inefficient and adding 10 more efficient lanes for a net gain of four lanes. At this point, Clear will have to put on hold the 6,000 people in Atlanta they’ve already signed up at $128 a year. Continental Flying Solo for Now After the Delta-Northwest merger announcement, there was much speculation about a possible Continental-United merger. After all, how can these two airlines compete against the bigger new Delta? Not so fast, said Continental’s board of directors who had studied the possibility of a merger and decided that the carrier could do better by itself. United’s Chairman Glenn Tilton issued a statement in response saying that their “strategy is consistent. Consolidation is underway – ensuring you have the right partner is everything.” Stay tuned for more news in the ongoing series of “As the Airlines Turn.” But bottom line, none of it’s good for the consumer.
