Great Rift Forges Family Bonds
Six million years in the making and visible from space, the Grand Canyon is a mile deep, 18 miles wide, and 277 miles long. The Colorado River rushes and tumbles and grinds through it, inexorably carving the canyon ever deeper.
But forget the statistics. The Grand Canyon will blow your doors off. It's awesome, incredible, unbelievable. It's also sacred to the Hopi, who in misty-distant tribal memory emerged into this world through a portal in the canyon's shadowy depths. In 1540, a group of Spanish soldiers descended about a third of the way into the canyon with some Hopi guides, but had to turn back because of lack of water. Historians speculate that the guides were satisfied by this outcome. No more Europeans visited again for over two centuries.
Today, about 5 million people a year visit the Grand Canyon. Some 4.99 million of them get out of their car at the first viewpoint, take a picture, eat a candy bar, and head for Hoover Dam. Off the Beaten Path travelers are satisfied by this outcome. And here's why:
OBP's most excellent family adventure, Unforgettable Grand Canyon, leaves the masses far behind. For two days your family's home base is a comfortable, fully catered private tent camp in a forest oasis near the South Rim. From there, you enjoy guided explorations of hiking trails, archaeological and historical sites, and geological wonders.
After two nights in your tent accommodations, you shift gears for a three-day stay at the exceptional Enchantment Resort in Sedona, Arizona, where "casita style" accommodations nestle into a pristine red-rock setting. Along with a destination spa and wine-tastings for the grown-ups, the resort offers biking and hiking trails, croquet and bocce, tennis and swimming, and special programs like gourd pottery and narrated star-gazing.
Kid-savvy guides make this family journey a much-appreciated and long-remembered experience. Don't miss a fantastic chance to visit one of the Seven Wonders of the Natural World with your family, on a journey that balances fun and learning, camping and comfort, and free time and focus.
