Travelers can pick up the rental car at the Rome airport and drive to Sabaudia, a renowned beach resort some 60 miles down the coast. The new, modern 4-star Il San Francesco, surrounded by Circeo National Park, is set on Lake Sabaudia and has its own private beach not far away. The hotel also has a relaxing oasis of a garden and a pier on the lake for swimming, sailing and canoeing. The ruins of ancient Roman villas, walls and roads can be seen nearby and there are seaside resorts like Sperlonga and Terracina (both of which boast picturesque old towns) to explore. Also in the vicinity are three old monasteries and Ninfa, a botanical garden planted amongst the ruins of a medieval town.
Then it’s back to Rome for sightseeing, shopping, dining in sun-dappled ancient squares and two nights at the elegant 4-star Hotel Quirinale, whose rooms are furnished with antiques in classic Roman style and whose private garden connects the hotel to the Rome Opera House.
