Works of Antonius Roberts on Exhibit at The Westin Grand Bahama Island Our Lucaya Resort

GRAND BAHAMA ISLAND, The Bahamas (May 14, 2008) - Twelve statuesque women stand together, their stances strong as they hold their ground in an inspirational art display at The Westin Grand Bahama Island Our Lucaya Resort.  The creation of renowned Bahamian artist Antonius Roberts, these "Sacred Women," carved from indigenous trees, are a window to the past of the first settlers of Freetown, a town founded by former slaves and one of the oldest settlements on Grand Bahama Island.

"My sculptures are inspired by an ancestral urge to conserve that which we destroy or discard in the name of progress," said Roberts of his reflective work.

According to Roberts, the use of local trees and the representation of freed slaves connect the past with the present of Grand Bahama Island.  Transformed from trees while still rooted on the beach, the statues were originally crafted to bend and gaze in the direction of Africa.

The "Sacred Women" can be viewed at The Westin until they move to their new home at The Heritage Museum and Gallery this fall, courtesy of The Grand Bahama Heritage Foundation.

The Westin Grand Bahama Island Our Lucaya Resort is an AAA four-diamond resort along 7.5 acres of white sand beach on Grand Bahama Island, just 55 miles off the coast of Florida.  Guests can spend their days doing as much or as little as they please at this 740-room resort, featuring comfortable, contemporary Art Deco-inspired rooms, many of which have ocean views.
Whether basking in the glow of the sun's warm rays on the beach or from one of the three swimming pools, playing an 18-hole round of golf at the two championship golf courses, flirting with lady luck at the casino, or working out at the fully-equipped fitness cetner, there is something to suit every fancy.  The resort also features an impressive 95,000-square-feet of meeting space perfect for weddings and events of all shapes and sizes.
