Ravello, a Gem on the Amalfi Coast

By Judi Janofsky & Rich Steck

Along the twisting roads and slopes of the Italian hills rising from the sea is Ravello, the quintessential gem of the Amalfi Coast. Originally founded around 500 A.D. by inhabitants fleeing the oppression of Rome, it is now filled with well-heeled tourists fleeing the oppressive masses staying at the more popular and accessible towns of Amalfi and Positano.

Ravello's cliffside location is its greatest allure. It seems to be suspended between sky and sea. And no matter where you stand, the town offers spectacular views of the lushly landscaped countryside, tiny hamlets or turquoise seas. Most of its streets are narrow steep labyrinth paths that ramble by the town's main plaza and up to its two famous villas. Along the route are ancient buildings designed in a Moorish style, due mainly to the town's Arab-Sicilian trade relationship in the past.

The incredible view from Villa Cimbrone's terrace.

A day's tour should start in Piazza Vescovado at the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Assumption. Built in the 11th century, the church is dedicated to St. Pantaleone, the patron saint of the city, and contains the relics of the saint's blood. A walk behind the 17th century altar reveals a glass vessel containing his blood which is reported to become translucent each year on July 27.
