Romance in the Black Forest By Judi Janofsky Without a doubt, Germany's Black Forest is one of the most romantic areas in Europe. Its rolling hills wind through a beautiful patchwork of dense forests, lush green meadows and crystal blue lakes. Dotting the countryside are castles as dreamy as the fairy tales they inspired. Throughout the 100-mile north-to-south area, the landscape rises about 4,000 feet and then drops steeply into valleys dotted with tiny picturesque villages. Perched atop a hill overlooking the town of Baiersbronn is the Hotel Bareiss, one of Germany's favorite and most beautiful resorts. Owned and operated by Hermann Bareiss and his family, the hotel's "never say no to the guest" philosophy has garnered a loyal clientele and all kinds of awards, including the number two spot in the "100 Best Hotels in Germany" and a Bilanz Hotel Guide rating of #16 among the "25 Best Hotels in the World." The Hotel Bareiss is a wonderland in winter. Its overall style is light English country, a modern interpretation of Laura Ashley with hand painted walls and ceilings and exquisite wood furniture upholstered in delightful floral and striped fabrics.
Suite 200 is the perfect sanctuary for lovers at any age. The circular living room in reds and yellows is wrapped with a private balcony offering tranquil views of the valley and village below and the Black Forest beyond. A small dining table, covered with white linens, is topped with fresh flowers and an assortment of delightful petit fours. In the bedroom, a king-sized bed, covered with a feathery white comforter, is so warm and cozy it's difficult to resist even in the afternoon. But gastronomic magic awaits guests in the hotel's French restaurant, The Bareiss. The cozy Provencal-styled room shows the attention to detail that earned it two Michelin stars, including the elegant table linens, fresh-cut flowers, baskets of petite saffron and fleur de sel and an 800-label wine selection. Not to mention exquisitely prepared and inventive cuisine of fresh river pike, white asparagus spears, veal medallions and creamy French cheeses. ...More Recent Articles |
