5 Safe Sun Tips for Travelers

05-30-2008

The sun knows no season and whether traveling nationally or internationally, travelers are probably getting unintentional UV exposure. UVA rays can cause premature aging, wrinkles, sun spots and even certain types of skin cancer. These rays shine through plane and airport windows, through clouds and reflect off sand and water. UVB rays cause skin to burn.

From trekking outside on an eco-tour to sitting inside an airport during a layover, incidental sun exposure can be damaging to travelers’ skin.

Dr. Beth Lange, Senior Director at the Coppertone Solar Research Center offers summer travelers these 5 Safe Sun Tips:

1.. Follow the shadow rule. If your shadow is shorter than you are, the sun’s rays are at their strongest.  Cover up with protective clothing, such as a hat and sunglasses and head for the shade.

2. Choose a sunscreen that you’ll actually use.  If it feels good on your skin and is easy to use, you’ll be more likely to reapply.

3. Re-Apply.   One coat isn’t sufficient if you’re staying in the sun . Stay alert to the amount of sun exposure you’re getting. Remember to reapply every 80 minutes and after swimming, toweling off or sweating (even if the sunscreen is waterproof and sweatproof).

4. BEWARE of Tanning Myths. Most dermatologists will tell you that a tan is not a natural protection but a reaction to skin injury.

5. See a dermatologist once a year for a skin check -- no matter what your age.  If detected early, melanoma can be treatable (survival rates for patients with early detection are about 99% but decrease depending on how far the melanoma has spread).
