Tour d'Afrique Ltd. bicycle and expedition company

In just over 2 months, the 2008 Silk Route Bicycle Expedition will roll out of Istanbul. Even if you cannot  join us for the entire trip, some incredible sections are still available! In fact, to entice you onto this on this spectacular route, we are offering 10% off the entry fee for one or more sections or even the complete expedition! Northeastern Turkey, and onward through Georgia and Azerbaijan are made for great cycling. Quiet country roads, some paved, some not. Scenery that is striking enough to make you forget that your legs are burning as you ascend one of many long climbs. The deserts in Turkmenistan and China are breathtaking in their vastness and serenity. Throughout the rest of Central Asia you will cycle past cotton fields and horse drawn carts while in Kyrgyzstan you will climb  through beautiful mountain passes. Pedaling on into China you will pass through beautiful mountain ranges, painted in diagonal brush strokes of vibrant earth tones. The rest of China gradually transforms into a swirl of colour and action - noises filling your senses. Every so often the route meanders through the quiet countryside with farmers smiling and waving as you pass, and with time available to enjoy the crisp morning air at a roadside dumpling house or tea shop.

The TDA 2008 has ended! Looking back TDA 2008 staff member Randy Pielsticker thinks that "It is not a vacation; it’s a way of life.  Pedaling 125 km per day and camping in a foreign wilderness each night seems extreme, but it very quickly becomes routine.  Cycle touring is the most experiential means of travel.  When traveling by car, train, plane or bus you suffer from a displacement effect, waking up in a foreign place with no perception of the spatial variations.  Not only does long distance cycling induce natural meditation, it stimulates all your senses.  You feel the temperature drop as you relentlessly crank to the summit of each mountain pass.  You smell, or perhaps stop to taste strange foods cooking as you roll through villages that are rarely visited by tourists.  You hear the birdsong provide a melody to the tempo of your cardiovascular system.  And you observe the flora change across the diverse geography of an entire continent.  Exposure to the elements makes you feel alive.  This is what creates the Zen of cycle touring.  For some the best part is that the daily exercise allows you to eat like a king with complete disregard for your waistline!"

TDA Foundation News

The Tour d’ Afrique Foundation donated sixty eight bikes in Windhoek, Namibia and a further ninety bicycles in Cape Town on Saturday May 10th, ending the Foundation's most successful year ever. In all, a total of 265 bicycles were donated to a wide variety of worthy grassroots organizations throughout Africa. As well, a cash donation was made to an organization, Maji Mazuri, in Kenya in lieu of bikes to help them overcome the effects of the recent political violence there. The 68 bikes donated in Windhoek were due to the fund raising efforts of Victoria, BC native Chris Wille while the 90 bikes donated in Cape Town were as a result of the work of the father and son team of Rod and David Pennington who hail from Vancouver, BC. A big 'Thank You' to all three of them!
