TWO LONG ISLAND BEACHES NAMED ON “2008 TOP TEN BEACHES” LIST
05-30-2008
HAUPPAUGE, NY -(May 27, 2008)- Visit Long Island, NY where you can experience two of America’s Top Ten Beaches, both in the same day.
Long Island’s Cooper’s Beach in Southampton and Main Beach in East Hampton are both named on Dr. Stephen Leatherman’s (AKA Dr. Beach) “2008 Top Ten Beaches” listing. These beaches are ranked along side beaches from California, Florida and Hawaii.
Dr. Beach, a PH.D Coastal Scientist with over 30 years experience studying beach health and safety, has been compiling his annual listing of top ten beaches in America since 1991. He takes into consideration 50 criteria when evaluating beaches, including water and sand quality, waves, presence of wildlife, noise, intensity of use, views and vistas, absence of rubble, facilities and amenities, and ‘non-urbanism.’
“Long Island has always been known for its miles of spectacular white sand beaches that stretch from Long Beach to Montauk,” said Kristen Matejka, director of marketing at the Long Island Convention & Visitors Bureau (LICVB). “Having two of our South Shore beaches named on Dr. Beach’s listing is a great recognition of what Long Island has to offer.”
Coopers Beach in Southampton places forth in the Top Ten Beaches in America according to Dr. Beach. Visitors can enjoy the white sandy shores with the backdrop of nature and nearby historic villages and mansions. Located on Dune Rd., the beach has full facilities including concession, bathhouse and umbrella rentals. Parking fee applies.
Main Beach in East Hampton is ranked sixth among the Top Ten Beaches in America, according to Dr. Beach. With its stunning, pristine shoreline, Main Beach has seasonal lifeguards on duty and an ocean awareness program offered several times during the summer. Wildlife, such as piping plover, can be seen making their home on the beach. Parking fee applies.
