Flying With Children

Six Tips for Making Your Child's Flying Experience a Happy One

By Judi Janofsky & Rich Steck

Flying on airplanes these days is almost always a trying experience for adults. So what can parents do to make it a positive event for kids flying for the first time? Here are six tips to help make it a happy experience.

Request Bulkhead Seats
Even if you make your reservations online, call the airline, tell them you're traveling with children and request bulkhead seats. These seats offer more legroom and a place to put a small bassinet if necessary.

Prepare Them
Kids are curious about flying. If your child wants to know how a plane flies or what it feels like to fly, read one of the many books available that introduce flying to children.

Pack Some Toys
Be sure to pack a bag of toys and snacks to keep your child occupied during the flight. Include his or her favorite blanket or stuffed toy.

Get There Early
To avoid the stress of long lines at check-in and security, get to the airport early. Have some lunch or a snack with your kids. Maybe spend a few minutes at one of the play areas that many airports now have. If necessary, arrange for your airline to help transport you, your children and your luggage to the gate, or to help make a connecting flight.

Avoid Ear Pain
If your child has an ear infection, you may wish to consult your doctor before flying. But even without an infection, young children can experience an uncomfortable feeling of pressure in their ears because the Eustachian tubes in their ears are narrow. To help decrease or eliminate the pain, have your child chew gum or suck on hard candy (if older than 3) or, if younger, take a bottle (sitting up) or pacifier during take off and landings. Yawning can help as well.

Stay Hydrated
Flying in a plane can be like living in the desert - dry. Be sure your child drinks plenty of decaffeinated fluids (preferably water) during the flight. Not only will it keep them hydrated but it also encourages your child to keep swallowing, keeping the Eustachian tubes open.
