Staying Connected From Abroad

Well, you've managed to snag a halfway decent airfare to Europe, booked a smaller, less expensive hotel in order to stretch your weakening dollars abroad and you're ready to go.

But you're a little nervous about being able to stay in touch with your children who are staying with grandma, your ailing parents, your maniac brother, your employer who has been laying off colleagues like crazy (are you next?) or the kennel who has your sweetie-pie dog Fido.

So, what's the best way to stay in touch? Well, there's not an easy answer. But here are some suggestions:

Email
Europe isn't as well connected as the U.S. and Internet Cafés are hard to come by or don't seem to have reliable Internet service everywhere. So relying on email is not a good idea. Besides who wants to lug a laptop around Europe?

Renting a Phone
After a bit of research on this option, you've decided it's probably the most expensive way to go. International phone rentals vary depending on the country in which you will be using it. Plus you'll be assigned a local number. Some companies, such as roberts-rent-a-phone.com, don't charge for incoming calls, but outgoing calls are charged at $.95 a minute in France or Italy and the weekly rental is $22.75, plus $30 for shipping both ways.

Using Your Cellphone
If your carrier is either T-Mobile or AT&T, chances are your phone will work in Europe. There are two ways you can use your own phone:
