Rex Needs a Vacation, too

By Rich Steck & Judi Janofsky

You probably wouldn't go off on vacation without your children, would you? Well, OK, maybe you might if your child's grandparents or favorite aunt/uncle would welcome a chance to spend a week or two with the little darling. Guilt? Maybe. Anxiety? Probably. Next year? "Let's take her/him with us."

Now, would you believe there are lots of people who feel the same way about their dog? And why not? You get 50 weeks of unwavering love and devotion - how could you possibly abandon such loyalty while you go off hedonistically (some might say selfishly) vacationing and Champ gets two weeks in a kennel cage or with that scary family across the street.

Nope, Bowser goes with the family. But where and who's gonna' welcome the three of you?

Well, pet-loving Tara and Len Kain, founders of DogFriendly.com, have made that decision easier for thousands of pet-traveling families. They've compiled an almost unbelievable compendium of places that welcome travelers and their dogs. Not just hotels and motels, but restaurants, attractions, parks, beaches and stores. Like the first subway in America - the Boston T, or Tiffany's in New York (what female wouldn't like a diamond-studded collar?) or one of the most unique aquariums in the world in Key West.

Toby takes Len Kain on a boat ride in Newport Beach, California. Toby's big, but not THAT big.

Since 1990, the Kains began eight years of researching and collecting data about dog friendly everything. In 1998 they went online with DogFriendly.com and now their site offers thousands of dog-friendly listings in its free online dog travel guides, as well as in its dog travel paperback books.
