The Inside Scoop On Great Ice Cream

By Rich Steck & Judi Janofsky

Fried chicken may be "finger lickin' good" but the best lick of all is a cold scoop of ice cream in a waffle cone on a hot summer afternoon (or morning or night).

We just returned from hosting two Provence Escapes tours in France where every small village (and large town, too, for that matter) has big displays filled with all kinds of fanciful flavored ice cream. Every time I saw someone walking down a cobblestone street with a cone in hand, I reacted like Pavlov's dog salivating for a treat. Provence may be celebrated for its wine, cheese and cuisine, but its ice cream is just as praiseworthy.

Back home in our own country, according to the International Dairy Foods Association and, ice cream is enjoyed by a whopping 90% of all Americans and dates back to the fourth century B.C. in Italy and China.Since July is National Ice Cream Month, luxury travel company Tauck World Discovery has unveiled a top 10 list of the world's best places to enjoy the frozen treat.(Tauck offers over 100 travel adventures in 63 countries on six continents, and compiled its list based on input from its global network of nearly 250 Tauck Directors who collectively rack up over 30,000 days on the road each year.)

"Our Tauck Directors have a real in-depth, local knowledge of the destinations where we travel," explained Tauck CEO Dan Mahar. "Because they take our guests off-the-beaten-path to discover the hidden gems in each country we visit, it's only natural that they'd know where to find the best ice cream."
