TSA News

Most passengers have come to dread going through security checkpoints at airports. The often long lines and frustrating waits have caused more than just a few passengers to miss their planes. Both the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) and manufacturers have been looking for ways to move the lines a bit faster. Here are just a few things that are being implemented or reviewed that should help.

New Body Scanners to Replace Pat-Downs
Last week, security screeners at 10 of the U.S.'s busiest airports started getting a more intimate view of airline passengers who are selected for additional screening at security checkpoints.

The Transportation Security Administration is installing 38 new millimeter wave whole body scanners which allow security personnel to see underneath a passenger's clothing to check for any weapons, explosives, drugs or other contraband.

Originally tested at Phoenix's Sky Harbor Airport in 2007, the scanners produce an outline of the body in black, white and grey. Passengers who don't want to be scanned by this new technology can have a pat-down search instead.

The scanners are currently being installed in Baltimore, Dallas, Denver, Detroit, Los Angeles, New York, Miami, Albuquerque, Phoenix and Las Vegas.

New Laptop Cases May Pass Inspection
According to several sources, the Transportation Security Administration is looking at newly designed "checkpoint-friendly" laptop cases that let security screeners see through the bag. Currently passengers have to remove their laptops from bags and put them in a security bin to pass through the x-ray machine. (Straps and padding prevent the x-ray machine from getting a clear picture of the laptop.)
