Dollar's Doing Well in Switzerland

If you're thinking about a European vacation, but hesitating because of he dollar's poor exchange rate against the euro, here's a welcome bit of news: the dollar is holding up just fine against the Swiss franc at just about par because Switzerland uses their own national currency.

Which means there are bargains to be found. Of course, "bargain" is a subjective concept, depending on your lifestyle and financial means, but here are a couple of packages we recently discovered.

"The Weekend" package at The Dolder Grand in Zurich
Grand's a pretty apt name for this hotel that recently re-opened after being closed for a four-year $450 million transformation. The new hotel features 173 guest rooms and suites, including a collection of four over-the-top suites inspired by cultural icons, two restaurants, a bar and an amazing 43,000 square foot spa. The Dolder offers a weekend package dubbed "The Weekend" (sometimes the Swiss are better at banking than creating imaginative titles, but "The Weekend" does say it all, doesn't it?). This two night package for two in a superior room includes daily continental breakfast in the hotel's Garden restaurant, and a 90 minute Grand Body Ritual for each person (there are seven Rituals to choose from on the Dolder Grand Spa menu). From $1,883 double occupancy - up to 19% savings. Available for stays between Friday and Monday until December 31, 2008. More info at www.thedoldergrand.com/en.

"Go Green in St. Moritz" package at  Badrutt's Palace Hotel in St Moritz
This three-night package for two in a Superior room includes a free upgrade upon availability, daily buffet breakfast; complimentary mini-bar, movie channels and Internet, daily newspaper; hiking map of the region; daily set-dinners with regional specialties in "Chesa Veglia" or a Palace Restaurant (excluding beverages); horse drawn carriage ride to Roseg Glacier with return transfer to Pontresina; one organic Palace picnic basket per person; tickets to the self-guided Clean Energy Tour around St. Moritz; guided tour of the new ecologically sensitive heating system within Badrutt's Palace Hotel; free tickets for all mountain railways and cable-cars in St. Moritz and public transportation within St. Moritz. From $ 2,124 double occupancy - a 22.5% discount on rack rates.
