Lake Quinault Lodge to Host “Quinault Rain Forest Mushroom Festival”

09-13-2008

Olympic National Forest Lodge savors the art, science and flavors of local mushrooms

OLYMPIC NATIONAL FOREST, WASept. 11, 2008 – Lake Quinault Lodge, a historic lodge located in the heart of the Olympic National Forest, will host the sixth annual “Quinault Rain Forest Mushroom Festival,” Oct.17-19, 2008. Admission to the festival is $20 for the entire weekend and is free for children five years old and younger. Lake Quinault Lodge is also offering room rates starting at just $89 per night.

Located in a temperate rain forest on the shoreline of Lake Quinault – and just three-and-a-half hours from Seattle – Lake Quinault Lodge is an ideal host for the Mushroom Festival.  The event will feature guided interpretive mushroom walks, mushroom collecting seminars, a chainsaw mushroom carving presentation, mushroom identification classes, and tips for growing mushrooms at home.

Speakers throughout the weekend include Lake Quinault Lodge Executive Chef Patrick Norris, who will host a “Cooking with Mushrooms” demonstration and walk guests through delicious mushroom-inspired recipes. Dr. Steven Trudell, a professional mycologist and University of Washington-Seattle professor, will give a presentation on mushroom collecting, fungi and forest health and mushroom identification. Other presenters include Julia Coffey from Fungi-Perfecti and representatives from Fletcher Street Ostrom’s Mushroom Farm.

In addition, exciting “Shroom” prizes will be given out at Fungi Bingo, hosted by Jeff the “Fun Guy.” The festival ends on Sunday, Oct. 19 with a grand finale program entitled “Mushroom Munchkins,” a special session for children.

“The Pacific Northwest offers some of the world's finest conditions for growing and harvesting mushrooms,” said Beth Showalter, director of sales and marketing, ARAMARK Olympic Peninsula. “Guests will get the chance to discover how to find, clean and cook with them while enjoying the amenities and beautiful rainforest.”
