Ride the Rails of the Undead

The high cost of gas has been a boon for rail travel, with some AMTRAK routes rolling full during peak travel times, a welcome change for our national passenger train service.

Even the little mostly entertainment lines are perking up as a nice alternative to more expensive theme park type adventures. Case in point: the Hocking Valley Scenic Railway's Hocking Express out of Nelsonville, Ohio, with a 22-mile roundtrip to Logan, Ohio.

Folks line up at the restored station in Nelsonville, Ohio, for a trip aboard the Hocking Valley Scenic Railroad.

What makes this route especially interesting, besides their colorful leaf-peeping rides during the fall day light hours, plus train robbery excursions, is what happens at night as guests ride the rails of the undead.

There's something creepy about riding the rails at sundown. Haunting noises make the imagination race. A chill wafts through the passenger car and with a jolt, IT happens. Let your imaginations reveal what IT is. But we're assured passengers will become part of the show - the living part, that is.

There's something a bit unusual about a passenger on the evening run who identifies himself as Professor Phillip Phelps who claims he's investigating psychic phenomenon.

The Professor has been at this business for years, long enough to differentiate between ectoplasmic vapors, orbs and globes. But he soon finds something unearthly has been investigating him - The Vampire Whisperer!

The steady click-click of the train wheels seems to sound more like "Watch out! - Watch out!" to the more susceptible passengers.

Of course, It's all a professional theatric event performed by Random Acts of Mysteries and includes improvisation, music and sound effects and of course audience participation and lots of laughter. It is up to the passengers to find the clues to solve the mystery.

The Vampire Whisperer installment of Hocking Valley Mystery Trains runs October 24 & 25 and 29-31, 2008.
