Overflow With October Fun

 

Ship Bottom, NJ, October 1, 2008– Fall is fantastic in Southern Ocean County, as days are warm and nights are mild and weekends are filled with fun festivals and events for the whole family.

 

Several ongoing exhibits throughout the month include “Key Ingredients: America By Food,” a Smithsonian Exhibit, at Tuckerton Seaport, in Tuckerton, from Wednesday, Oct. 1 through Sunday, Oct. 19; the “Print Center Exhibition 82nd Annual International Photography Competition,” at the LBI Foundation for the Arts and Sciences, in Loveladies, from Wednesday, Oct. 1 through Monday, Oct. 27; and the “5th Annual Horror and Sci-Fi Poster Gallery Exhibit,” from Saturday, Oct. 4 through Saturday, Jan. 10, 2009, at Unshredded Nostalgia, in Barnegat.

 

Saturday, Oct. 11, features the beginning of the 54th Annual Long Beach Island Surf Fishing Classic, which runs through Sunday, Nov. 23, and awards thousands of dollars in cash and daily, weekly and grand prizes, including special juvenile, student, ladies and senior citizen category prizes, for catching the largest striped bass and bluefish. Tournament rules and registration forms are available from the Southern Ocean County Chamber of Commerce, www.discoversouthernocean.com. 

 

Everyone can wish a “Happy Birthday” to Old Barney, at the Sesquicentennial (150th) Anniversary celebration of the Barnegat Lighthouse, in Barnegat Light, on Saturday, Oct. 11, which features a series of talks, concerts, exhibits and demonstrations throughout the day.

 

The 14th Annual Pine Barrens Jamboree also takes place Saturday, Oct. 11, presenting an outstanding line-up of country, folk, bluegrass and Down Jersey Pinelands music bands during the day at the Wells Mills County Park, in Waretown, followed by an evening concert at the Albert Music Hall, in Waretown.

 

Several other exciting events also are held over the Oct. 11-12 weekend, including a concert by Johnny Maestro and the Brooklyn Bridge, at the Oceanfirst Theater, in Manahawkin, Saturday, Oct. 11, with all proceeds benefiting Saint Jude’s Children’s Hospital, and the 36th Annual Long Beach Island Commemorative 18-Mile Run, in Holgate, on Sunday, Oct. 12.

 

The Surflight Theater, in Beach Haven, offers musicals and shows throughout October, beginning with the suspenseful courtroom drama, “A Few Good Men,” Oct. 1-5, followed by the screwball comedic love story, “Leading Ladies,” Oct. 8-12; the comedy, “Harvey,” presenting the story of Elwood P. Dowd and his imaginary six-foot rabbit friend, on Oct. 15-19; and the world premiere of John Davidson’s autobiographical and provocative new play, “Father/Son (& Holy Ghost),” Oct. 22-26.

 

Also on stage during October, a half-dozen country, folk, bluegrass and Down Jersey Pinelands music bands get together for an outstanding concert every Saturday night at the Albert Music Hall, in Waretown; and the Oceanfirst Theater, in Stafford Township, offers a series of weekend shows, including Jim Murphy and the Pine Barrons country and bluegrass concert Saturday, Oct. 18; “James and the Giant Peach,” a theater show for young audiences, Sunday, Oct. 19; and the Garden State Philharmonic Orchestra’s “Things That Go Bump In The Night” concert, Sunday, Oct. 26.

 

On Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 18-19, the New Jersey Lighthouse Challenge takes place in which lighthouse enthusiasts are invited to climb every lighthouse in the State of New Jersey. Food, refreshments and children’s activities are offered. Registration and information are available at Tuckerton Seaport, in Tuckerton, and online at the New Jersey Lighthouse Society, www.njlhs.org.

 

For those interested in outdoor activities, there are Naturalist Ecological Tours on Saturdays at Cloverdale Farm County Park, in Barnegat, presented by the Ocean County Department of Parks & Recreation, with Saturday, Oct. 18 featuring a program on New Jersey’s Cranberry Harvest.  Clean Ocean Action will do a beach walk clean up program in Harvey Cedars, Saturday, Oct 18.

 

For those looking to scare up a good time for Halloween, several nightmarish events are being held in the region, including the 10th Annual Waretown Haunted Hayride, at Waretown Lake, in Waretown, Thursday and Friday, Oct. 23-24; the Creep Street Haunted Hayride, at Gazebo Park, in Barnegat Township, Friday and Saturday, Oct. 24-25; a Haunted Seaport at Tuckerton Seaport, in Tuckerton, where pirates and long lost sea captains prowl the village for a night of screams, Friday and Saturday, Oct. 24-25; and a Halloween Campfire, at Barnegat Lighthouse, in Barnegat Light, Saturday, Oct. 25, which features an enchanting evening of Revolutionary Era stories and roasted marshmallows.
