YELLOWKNIFE, NORTHWEST TERRITORIES, CANADA - If, while traveling in the far north, you've ever planned to watch the Aurora Borealis-nature's own sky show that is best known as the "Northern Lights"-you may have had a rude awakening. That translates to being awakened in the wee small hours to
get dressed and travel to a favored viewing spot.
Not so at Blachford Lake Lodge, a luxurious fly-in vacation getaway (quite
literally) that lies north of the 60th Parallel at the west end of remote 12-mile- long Blachford Lake, just north of the east arm of Great Slave Lake. As one of the largest lakes in North America, Great Slave Lake contains close to three percent of the world's fresh-water supply.
At the lodge, you can enjoy nature's fabulous light show without even leaving the premises. You can settle comfortably in the dining room or in one of the lodge's many comfortable lounges. You can soak outside in the bubbling hot tub or snuggle cozy in bed while you watch the lights.
Whatever your vantage point, it will be an experience you'll long remember.
Completely off the beaten track, this lodge is the stuff of memorable vacations. The "Aurora Borealis Adventure Tour" is offered by The Great Canadian Travel Company, North America's foremost experts in travel to some of the world's least-traveled regions. The company is a specialist in travel to the Yukon, Alaska, Iceland, Greenland and other destinations at "The Top of the World."
Some of the best displays of Northern Lights can be seen in early winter, but any time the lights are out, they light up the night sky magnificently.
Departures for 2009 are Fridays and Sundays, February-April and mid-August to the end of September.
Blachford Lake Lodge provides accommodations for 38, including five
rustic- but-comfortable log cabins and a delightful main lodge. The latter is extremely companionable, with dining room, lounge, bar, fireplaces and showers.
The Lodge tipi is a gathering spot for evening activities, where a Dene cultural evening introduces the history of the Dene nation. Many award- winning photographs of the Aurora Borealis have been taken with the tipi as a backdrop.
Winter brings a range of activities. These include more than a dozen miles of groomed cross-country ski trails, snowshoeing, ice skating, snowmobiling, dog sledding and ice fishing. You can go tobogganing on sealskins or simply relax with a sauna or a soak in the hot tub.
In warmer weather, sport fishing is superb, with "catch-and-release" for hefty northern pike, whitefish, walleye and lake trout. Guests also take advantage of excellent canoeing and sea kayaking, and may choose to involve themselves in hiking, exploring, swimming, arts and crafts, pleasure boating and shore fishing. Any of these activities can be self-guided adventures or you may elect to take advantage of staff guides available at the lodge.
Cost of an all-inclusive three-day vacation at Blachford Lake Lodge is
$1,339
(Canadian) per person (based on double occupancy). A six-day all-inclusive vacation is priced at CA$2,675, an eight-day all-inclusive vacation is CA$3,350.
Included is a round-trip scenic flight via float plane or ski plane Yellowknife/Blanchard, all-inclusive lodge or cabin accommodation, gourmet meals and snacks prepared by in-house chef and two interpretive tours per day. Also included is use of lodge facilities (Aurora Lounge Northern Library and licensed bar), plus use of seasonal equipment including skis, snowshoes,
motorboats, canoes and kayaks.
Reservations, copies of the full-color "Top of the World" catalog and additional information are available from The Great Canadian Travel Company,
