Highway Howlers

One of the pleasures of slow travel - aka cycling - is having a chance to see what's odd about your surroundings. Like goofy road signs, unintentionally funny. And when you're tired from pedaling a bunch of miles on a hot day, funny is a good feeling.

I've shot a few on my bike travels - not with buckshot, but with a camera. So when I learned about a new book about to be published that features page after page of funny signs, my curiosity kicked in. Here's what I learned:

Everybody knows that road signs are meant to inform, entice, and warn drivers. But when strategically burnt-out neon, cunningly rearranged letters, baffling grammar, ironic juxtapositions and spelling from another planet occur, signs can become amazingly funny.

Could this be 'honesty in advertising'?

When Mark Sedenquist and Megan Edwards hit the road back in 1994, they began taking photos of mixed-up marquees and billboard blunders. After they put their fledgling collection of funny signs on their website, Road Trip America, back in 1996, other lovers of roadside esoterica began sharing the results of their own adventures in sign stalking.

Now they've collected the best images from more than 90 photographers in their new book, Caution: Funny Signs Ahead after a decade's worth of submissions to RoadTripAmerica.com. It includes photos from all over the United States, Canada, and beyond.
