Unusual Springtime Events Abound in Kansas:  Depending on where travelers find themselves traveling in Kansas this ! spring, there are a plenty of unique events taking place for the entire family.

  • The Prairie Fire Festival, April 6-11, 2009 in Cottonwood Falls is a week-long event in tribute to the ranchers of the Flint Hills of Kansas who participate in the annual range management practice of burning the prairie.  One of the integral prairie management tools, the annual prairie fires are a remarkable, observable spring-time event for visitors traveling through the Flint Hills region.  Events in Cottonwood Falls include educational seminars, art and great local music.  For more information, www.prairiefirefestival.com.  
  • Wamego celebrates its annual Tulip Festival, April 18-19, 2009.  The Wamego City Park, as well as other green areas and many home gardens come alive with the vibra! nt colors of more than 18,000 tulips.  Many of the bulbs for these bright, early spring flowers come from Holland and are the backdrop for this mid-April weekend festival complete with more than 100 art and craft booths and live entertainment for all ages.  For more information, www.wamegochamber.com.  
  • The Wichita River Festival, May 8-16, 2009 celebrates its 39th Anniversary this year, attracting more than 300,000 participants for nine days of fun-filled activities.  More than 60 events are planned including concerts, sporting events, river events, kids’ activities, fireworks, a parade and more.  For more information, www.visitwichita.com.
