THE BEST “BAGGED BARGAIN” IN SOUTH AFRICA

02-26-2009

WINELANDS, WILDLIFE, WATERSCAPES

CAPE TOWN, SOUTH AFRICA (02/09) The Mantis Collection, a group of world-famous game reserves and boutique hotels, has put together an eight-day, seven-night package for travelers who want a range of adventure and a bang for their buck. This package covers the waterfront, literally and figuratively. It starts in the scintillating city of Cape Town, described in a recent New York Times article as “part Alaska, part Big Sur, but always African....a naturalist's dream,” and ends at a fabulous resort, the ultra-luxe, five-star Oceana Beach and Wildlife Reserve.

Arriving in Cape Town, you will be met by a chauffeur, who will whisk you to Bishops’ Court – a luxury boutique guest house with breathtaking views of storied Table Mountain just ten minutes from city center. Alternatively, you can stay at the Constantia, an elegant boutique hotel situated in the heart of the Cape's oldest wine region, (Both hotels are properties of The Last Word Retreats.). En route to either hotel, your friendly and knowledgeable driver will acquaint you with your new surroundings. Once you've settled in, you will be directed to the best shops, restaurants, historic sites or cultural diversions, whatever it is you fancy.

On the morning of the third day you will take a leisurely hour's drive from Cape Town to Franschhoek, a beautiful little cosmopolitan village in the heart of the wine district where you will stay at The Franschhoek Hotel, an historic residence featuring six deluxe en suite double rooms, each opening onto a small shaded garden. Conrad, your winelands’ host, will not only recommend the best wine estates to visit, but pre-book you into the finest restaurants in town.

Day four you will take the short flight from Cape Town to Port Elizabeth (unless you opt to drive) followed by a short drive from Port Elizabeth to Shamwari, where you will spend two nights at the game reserve that has been chosen as Africa's best for 11 consecutive years. Should you arrive just past lunchtime, you can relax and take in your surroundings before the adventure begins. Your experienced ranger will be on hand to guide you through the African bush, and offer his extensive knowledge not only of the Big Five – lion, leopard, elephant, rhino and buffalo – but of the smaller plains game and wonderful birds that inhabit this 60,000 plus acres of land.

After two nights at Shamwari, you will be taken on an hour’s drive in a land rover to the ultimate place to unwind – the Oceana Beach and Wildlife Reserve, a superb luxury resort overlooking the turquoise waters of the Indian Ocean. The Ocean Lodge and spectacular private chalets sitting perched amid 2500 acres of rolling emerald grasslands offer sweeping vistas of the pearly white beaches below. After two restful nights you will depart your beach house for either Port Elizabeth Airport or Port Alfred.
