CANOE SEASON OPENS APRIL 1ST IN LOUDONVILLE

03-17-2009

Loudonville, Ohio

Spring brings with it the swallows to Capistrano and the buzzards to Hinckley Ridge.  And April 1st sees outdoor enthusiasts from all over returning to the "Canoe Capital of Ohio," when the canoe season officially begins in Loudonville.

"For years Loudonville has been one of the most popular places for canoeing in Ohio," explained Bob Yun, Executive Director of the Loudonville-Mohican Convention & Visitors Bureau.  "With seven canoe liveries within minutes of downtown, the Mohican River offers a variety of trip experiences.  As the River has been designated a Scenic Byway, Mohican canoe trips are always scenic and memorable."

Length of canoe trips can vary from 45 minutes to 3 days, depending on the livery operator.  In addition, visitors have a choice of canoes, kayak, tubes, or rafts.  As a Class One river, the Mohican usually flows gently and is forgiving for novices.

To help visitors plan their Loudonville canoe trip, starting April first the Visitors Bureau's web site provides the Mohican River condition report, which is updated daily throughout the season.  In addition, the canoeing section of the web has been enhanced to provide detailed information about each liveries in the area.  Information includes operating season, length of trips offered, type of water craft (canoe, kayak, raft, tube) and more.  The web site has hot links to each livery.  The canoeing season usually lasts until the end of October.

"It all started in 1961 when Dick Frye established Mohican Canoe Livery, now Mohican Adventures, and canoeing in Loudonville has grown ever since," Yun added.  "As most liveries offer group discounts, canoeing is affordable for families and a great activity for school and youth groups, family reunions, churches,  even as a corporate team building activity."  Some offer food service and facilities for larger groups.  A number of liveries provide camping and cabins, so visitors can canoe one day, spend the night and enjoy the many great activities in Mohican State Park and downtown Loudonville the next day.  And now, before the season kicks in, is a good time to make reservations for summer.

For more information  on planning your canoe getaway on the Mohican River, contact the Loudonville-Mohican Convention & Visitors Bureau at 877-2-MOHICAN; email Info@Loudonville-Mohican.com and www.Loudonville-Mohican.com.  Visitors can also stop by the Visitor Bureau office at 131 West Main in downtown Loudonville Monday - Friday 9:00 am to 4:00 pm and the new Visitors Information Center on State Route 3 across from the Mohican State Park campground check-in.
