The variety of unique and interesting museums across the state of Kansas is as diverse as the state itself.  The temporary museum exhibits listed below illustrate a small sampling of opportunities for travelers, regardless of th! e time of year or ultimate destination they choose in Kansas.

F.M. Steele Exhibit, Kansas Historical Society, Topeka, KS:  See the Kansas prairie through the eyes of pioneer photographer Francis Marion Steele in an upcoming temporary exhibit at the Kansas Historical Society.  The exhibit, Captured in Black & White: The Cowboys, Combines, and Small Towns of Frontier Photographer F.M. Steele, runs April 18 through May 30, 2009.  Steele arrived in Dodge City in 1890, outfitted a buggy with a portable studio, and set out across the prairie to photograph cowboys at work.  His surviving work covers all aspects of life in the southwestern Plains from farming, irrigation and railroad construction projects to studio portraits, landscapes, small-town life, and American Indians.  For more information visit

“Celebration of Flight:  Women in Aviation” at the Coutts ! Museum, El Dorado, KS:  Inspired by the birthplace of Amelia Earhart in Atchison and the historical birthplace of modern aviation in Wichita, Judi Geer Kellas has created her series of more than 40 paintings, drawings and prints to honor these aviation pioneers, from 1910 to the present.   The exhibit is available for viewing April 3 – May 27, 2009.  For more information visit

Asian Kites Blowing into Kansas:  The Stauth Memorial Museum in Montezuma, KS presents the traveling exhibit, Art on a String, consisting of an exceptional collection of unusual kites from Asia, all created for a variety of uses.  The exhibit is on display until May 3, 2009.  For more information visit
