Playa del Carmen, Mexico (April 21, 2009) – The Riviera Maya’s white sand beaches, deep-blue Caribbean sea and impressive Mayan ruins will be the backdrop of a free concert by Canadian music legend Gino Vannelli June 13, one of the warm-up events leading up to the region’s famous annual jazz festival November 25 to 28.

Born in Montreal in 1952 to a family headed by a jazz-singing father and a keen-eared mother, Vannelli formed his first band at the age of 12 and signed his first record deal at 16. He garnered tremendous crossover success beginning in the 1970s by infusing his songs with the R&B, jazz and other musical influences he so loved growing up. Ten of his songs, among them "People Gotta Move" and "I Just Wanna Stop,” made the Billboard pop charts, seven of them also charting Adult Contemporary and three of them crossing over to the R&B charts. Five of his 10 albums made the Billboard charts as well.

Vannelli continues to explore new boundaries of popular music as he performs with his jazz combo at venues across Europe or plays with his full band to throngs of enthusiastic fans in such diverse locales as Las Vegas, New Orleans, Indonesia and South Africa.

Vannelli’s Riviera Maya concert will take place on an impressive outdoor stage at Playa del Carmen’s Mamitas Beach at 8:00pm on June 13.

“The Riviera Maya is thrilled to welcome Gino Vannelli,” said Javier Aranda, director of the Riviera Maya Direct Marketing Office. “His performance will give visitors a taste of the caliber and diversity of talent they can expect to enjoy at this year’s Riviera Maya Jazz Festival November 25 to 28, an event we are also proud to present free of charge to our visitors.”
