White Mountains Map and Guide is Pure New Hampshire

05-11-2009

NORTH WOODSTOCK, N.H. - This summer, when hundreds of thousands of visitors head for the White Mountains, the map they'll use to find their way is truly a product made in New Hampshire.

The White Mountains Map and Guide is published and distributed annually by White Mountains Attractions and is the definitive map tourists use to plot their journeys around the region. It contains a full State highway map, information on attractions in the mountains and around the State, waterfalls & covered bridges, a calendar of events and other travel-useful information.

This year's edition is a little different from past years. "The White Mountains Map and Guide this year is 100 percent grown, designed and printed in New Hampshire," said Dick Bean, sales representative at Concord Litho.

For the first time, the Concord-based printing company is using paper produced by Fraser Paper's mill in Gorham, the last operating paper mill in Coos County. "This was printed on uncoated offset paper," said Steve Hebb, the purchasing manager at Concord Litho. "It printed well and has the strength we needed for a folded map. When we print maps, we are concerned with the strength of paper needed to make it lasting and durable."

Jayne O'Connor, president of White Mountains Attractions, which markets the region and its 16 tourist attractions, said she is pleased to offer the thousands of people who come to the White Mountains a map that hasn't been more well-traveled than the visitors.

"Our Map and Guide this year comes distinctly from this region," she said. "The paper was made in the White Mountains and it was printed in Concord and now thousands of copies of it are available at our visitor centers and businesses throughout New Hampshire. It is also especially gratifying to know that this is helping our neighbors in Gorham in these economic times."

First 1⁄2 million maps are being distributed now, and a second printing of the White Mountains Map and Guide goes back to press this month, to help fill the demand for later in the season. "It's a nice thing to do for our New Hampshire attractions, to get paper out of New Hampshire and to do the printing in New Hampshire," Hebb said.

Founded in 1958, Concord Litho is an independent, $43 million printing company in New Hampshire with six heat-set web and large-format sheetfed presses, serving a roster of national clients, including TV Guide, Rodale, Publishers Clearing House, TD Banknorth, Dunkin Donuts, and the World Wildlife Fund.
