JAMMIN' IN JUNE: TAKE A TRIP ON THE WILD SIDE

Mid-coast, MAINE - June is bustin' out all over along the coast of Maine Seal pups are frolicking; eagles and puffins are nesting; lupines are blooming; strawberries are nearly ripe; and windjammer crews are eager to cast off for an adventure on the wild side of Maine.

 

With days filled with more than 15 hours of light, there is extra time in June to enjoy the quiet harbors, uninhabited islands, beachside lobster bakes and abundant wildlife sightings that are part of every Maine windjammer cruise. Sailing conditions are perfect, too: average daytime temperatures in the 60s, little fog, clear skies and great sailing breezes.

 

During the month of June, rates average $150 per person, per day, including all meals, accommodations and activities. With steady winds and impeccably maintained historic schooners, guests enjoy the wonders of spruce and granite-lined shores and unhurried days punctuated by excursions to pristine islands and tiny fishing villages. At night guests can stargaze with abandon, enjoy the eerie calls of loons or relax with a row around the harbor. It's rustic and outdoorsy, but for most people, this is heaven, pure and simple.

 

Unlike cruise ships with packaged itineraries and cruise directors, shipboard life on a Maine windjammer excursion is entirely unstructured. The course of each 3- to 6-day voyage depends on the weather and the captain's whim. Since there are more than 3,000 islands dotting the coast of Maine, there are unlimited overnight anchorages.

 

From picturesque Rockland and Camden harbors in mid-coast Maine, the fleet of 12 historic windjammers sets sail for a voyage full of adventure and relaxation along the rocky coast.
