Even the most discriminating travelers are becoming more selective when deciding where to spend their vacation dollars this year.  They may still be looking for extraordinary destinations, but they avoiding conspicuous luxury. Hotel Fauchére, Milford, PA

Founded in 1852 and family operated for 124 years, this classic Italianate-style property was meticulously restored and reopened in 2006.   The hotel's Delmonico Room features contemporary interpretation of classic cuisine, while the more casual Bar Louis offers bistro-style global cuisine, including its signature Sushi Pizza, as well as a giant photograph of Andy Warhol and John Lennon above the bar.  It is near the Grey Towers National Historic Site and the Pike County Historical Society's Columns museum, which displays the famous blood-stained Lincoln Flag, which cushioned the dying president's head after he was assassinated.  Current rates:  Rooms starting at $275 a night (including breakfast).

 

Homestead Inn, Greenwich, CT

18th century Victorian manor house near the LI Sound, with Balinese and Chinese influenced interior design.  Celebrated Grand Chef Thomas Henkelmann's contemporary French cuisine.  Current rates: Rooms starting at $250 a night.

 

Fearrington House Country Inn Pittsboro, NC

Southern hospitality abounds at this hotel that features front porch rockers, European antiques,  water sculptures and manicured English gardens.  Notable feature:  A pasture of more than 30 belted Galloway cows.  The black and white "Oreo” cows, a rare breed of Scottish beef cattle, were introduced in the U.S. in the 1950s.  Five were brought to Fearington in 1981.   Current rates:  Rooms starting at $250 a night.   Summer getaway packages include one-night accommodations, three-course dinner, traditional English afternoon tea, full breakfast and $25 gift card to Shops at Fearrington, for $375 per couple.

 

Planter's Inn, Charleston, SC

Auberge Saint-Antoine - Quebec

Located in the heart of the first city to be founded in North America, the hotel stands on a unique archaeological site.  Notable features include a private screening room; daily archeological tours on site to view artifacts from the Ilot Hunt, discovered when the hotel was being built.  Current rates:  Rooms start at $159/night (Canadian dollars).
